Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodeas)

18 April

Returning about now to the banks of local rivers and lakes – but rather more rarely seen, as ths one, in gardens! There is a pond and a waterfall in this garden but no fish so after posing nicely he/she departed without a meal.

The largest of the North American Herons, their hardiness is such that individuals can often remain through cold northern winters, as well, so long as fish-bearing waters remain unfrozen. Individuals usually forage while standing in water, but also feed in fields or drop from the air, or a perch, into water.
